Le voyage - et c’est ce qui fait son charme - est une succession de rencontre et de hasards qui n’en sont pas toujours...

Je m’explique: il y a quelques jours, entre Nairobi et Kakamega, je découvre une fourre adaptée à mon macbook magnifique, faite d’une mosaïque de tissus Wax, aux finitions impeccables. Regardant où celui-ci était produit, je découvre que le produit est 100% Kenyan et qu’en plus d’être très fashion, il s’inscrit dans un programme soutenant les veuves et orphelins impactés par le virus du Sida. Malheureusement, l’adresse de leur shop et atelier de production n’est pas vraiment sur notre chemin...

Quelques jours plus tard, suite à une erreur de planning, nous nous retrouvons au Lac Navaisha avec une journée de libre, non loin de l’endroit en question. Ni une ni deux, rendez-vous est pris pour le lendemain.

Derrière une grosse porte en fer se cache une vrai caverne d’Ali Baba! De magnifiques sacs de toutes tailles et toutes formes, hyper colorés et combinant à merveille différents styles africains nous font de l’œil. Nous rencontrons Beatrice, Angela et Ben et en apprenons plus sur leur projet, les produits Bagamoyo et le travail effectué sur place depuis plus de 7 ans. Nous découvrons également - après la pause Tea-time, of course! - les ateliers attenant à la boutique. Répartis dans une pièce moyenne, plusieurs femmes et hommes s’affairent à leur machine à coudre et donnent vie à ces sacs, porteurs d’espoir pour toute une population marginalisée, comme nous l’explique Beatrice.

L’enthousiasme est là et nous nous laissons à rêver d’une collaboration (une petite collection de sacs Gakomo made in Kenya, ça vous tente?). L’avenir nous le dira, mais nous repartons de là-bas avec un bagage en plus au sens propre comme figuré ; )

Bagamoyo - bags to lay down your heart

The roadtrip - and that’s part of it’s spirit - is a succession of meeting new people and coincidences (or not...).

Let me explain: some days ago, between Nairobi and Kakamega, I discovered a shop selling a bag to fold my MacBook. This one is wonderful, made with a patchwork of wax textile and very well handcrafted. Regarding it’s origin, I finded that it is a 100% Kenyan product and, more than fashion, the goal of the trademark is to give hope to women and men impacted by HIV and support an orphanage. Unfortunately, it’s was not really on our way...

Some days later, after a small mistake in our planning, we were in the lake Naivasha with a full day off, not far from their headquarter. Without thinking twice, we organize an appointment for the next day.

Behind a heavy iron gate is hidden an real Aladdin's cave! Beautiful bags of all shapes and sizes, colorful and mixing African styles are waiting for us! We meet Beatriz, Angela and Ben there and they give us more information about their project, the Bagamoyo products and the work done for more than 7 years now. After the teatime (!) we discover the factory just behind the shop. Based in a medium-sized room, women and men are focused on their sewing machines and give life to the bags, bringing hope to this marginalized group of people, as Beatriz explains.

We are all enthusiastic and let the dream to collaborate on the future come true (tempted by a small collection of Gakomo bags made in Kenya?). Only the time will tell us, but we go back from this beautiful place with more than a baggage ; )
